What Is Dry Needling?
Dry needling is an evidence based technique used at Sports & Spinal Chiropractic Clinic. The procedure involves advancing a thin acupuncture-type needle into a trigger point (also referred to as a 'knot') in muscles. Trigger points generally form due to overuse/overload, via physical activity and exercise, or even poor posture and having a sedentary lifestyle. At Sports & Spinal Chiropractic Clinic, trigger point dry needling is used in conjunction with other therapies such as joint manipulation, stretching, electrotherapy and exercise rehabilitation. Ask one of our practitioners if dry needling can help you.
What To Expect With Dry Needling
Dry needling can be a very effective technique. The acupuncture-type needles we use are very thin, and you may experience a slight pinch as it pierces the skin. The procedure itself is aimed at clearing trigger points which shorten the muscle and cause you discomfort. When the needle glides through a trigger point, it elicits a twitch response within the muscle, which is what the practitioner is aiming for. Generally, the tighter the muscle, the more trigger points there are to clear out.
Following a dry needling procedure, it is common to feel some soreness (more so following the initial treatments). The soreness doesn't restrict any activities afterwards so it can still be performed before work, exercise, or training sessions.
